August Ponthier is an indie folk singer-songwriter working in alternative pop with clear country and folk influences. The catalog has built up in steady steps rather than a rush: "Faking My Own Death" in 2021, "Shaking Hands With Elvis" in 2022, and "Everywhere Isn't Texas" in 2026. The Songwriters Hall of Fame has profiled Ponthier as an indie singer-songwriter, an acknowledgment aimed squarely at the writing.

Raised in Allen, a suburb outside Dallas, Ponthier relocated to New York in their early twenties and landed in Brooklyn, and that change of address produced "Cowboy," the song that broke them through.
