Billy Strings is the stage name of American guitarist and singer William Lee Apostol, a bluegrass player whose sets stretch the form toward jam band territory. Signed to WMG, he has kept a steady release pace, with Me / And / Dad in 2022, Highway Prayers in 2024, and So Much for Goodbyes arriving in 2026. The through-line across them is his guitar work, with progressive bluegrass, Americana, roots rock and outlaw country all within reach.
He learned it at home. Born William Lee Apostol in Lansing, Michigan, he grew up in the small town of Muir and developed his guitar playing under the guidance of his stepfather, Terry Barber.
The playing has translated into both hardware and mileage. He won the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album for Home in 2021 and won it again for Billy Strings Live Vol. 1 in 2025, and by 2021 he was performing nearly 200 gigs a year, including appearances at major U.S. music festivals. That schedule has carried him to venues including the XL Center, Agganis Arena and Cross Insurance Arena, and it makes him a strong fit for festival and fair lineups, college programming, casino showrooms and private events.
