Gang of Four are a punk rock and post-punk band whose art punk and alternative dance leanings have kept their catalog moving well past their first decade. Signed to EMI Records, the band re-recorded and reframed its own material on Return the Gift in 2005, then returned with new writing on Content in 2011 and What Happens Next in 2015. Across those records the interest stays the same: sharp guitar, blunt rhythm, and lyrics with a conscious streak.
The band came together in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, in 1977, formed by a group of leftist university students. That starting point, a university town and a political argument rather than a scene, explains a lot about the sound that followed. They have been active since 1977 and hold a MOJO Award.
Jon King and Andy Gill anchored the group, with Hugo Burnham and Dave Allen filling out the original lineup that set the template. On stage the band has worked rooms like the Greenwich Odeum, the State Theatre, and the Bearsville Theater, which makes them a fit for theater and performing arts center dates, college events, festival and fair lineups, and private engagements.
