Japanese Breakfast is the solo project of Korean-American musician Michelle Zauner. Zauner was born on March 29, 1989, in Seoul, South Korea, and grew up in Eugene, Oregon. She began her music career in 2013 with the release of a solo album under the name Little Big League, before adopting the moniker Japanese Breakfast in 2014.
Japanese Breakfast's music is a blend of indie rock, dream pop, and shoegaze, with introspective lyrics and lush, ethereal instrumentation. The project's debut album, "Psychopomp," was released in 2016 and was inspired by the death of Zauner's mother. The album received critical acclaim and was followed by a tour with indie rock band Mitski.
Japanese Breakfast's second album, "Soft Sounds from Another Planet," was released in 2017 and explored themes of sci-fi and space exploration. The album received widespread critical acclaim and earned Zauner a nomination for Best Recording Package at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. In 2021, Japanese Breakfast released their third album, "Jubilee," which was inspired by 70s pop and glam rock.
In addition to her music career, Zauner is also a writer and has published a memoir titled "Crying in H Mart," which explores her relationship with her mother and her experience growing up as a Korean-American.
