John Bul Dau is a South Sudanese human rights activist and author. He was born in the village of Duk Pagak in the Jonglei State of South Sudan in 1974. In 1987, when he was just 13 years old, he was forced to flee his village due to the civil war in Sudan. He became one of the so-called "Lost Boys of Sudan" and spent several years walking through the wilderness, enduring hunger, thirst, and attacks by wild animals and enemy soldiers. In 2006, John Bul Dau co-founded the John Dau Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides healthcare, education, and other support to the people of South Sudan. He has also been an advocate for peace in Sudan and has spoken about his experiences as a Lost Boy at various events and in the media. John Bul Dau has written a memoir about his experiences called "God Grew Tired of Us: A Memoir." The book was also made into a documentary film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2006.
