Joywave is a Rochester band working across indie pop, indietronica, and alternative rock, and their real break came from someone else's song: frontman Daniel Armbruster co-wrote "Dangerous" for the electronic project Big Data, and its 2014 breakout led two labels to come calling, with Joywave signing to Disney-owned Hollywood Records. They became the first band ever given permission to sample the Disney film catalog, weaving bits of Fantasia, Bambi, and Peter Pan into their 2015 debut, How Do You Feel Now? They've kept a steady run of full-length albums since, through Content (2017), Possession (2020), Cleanse (2022), and Permanent Pleasure (2024), more than twenty releases total once mixtapes and EPs are counted.
The band came up together in Rochester, where Daniel Armbruster, Paul Brenner, and Joseph Morinelli had already played in local bands like The Hoodies before forming Joywave in 2010. More than a decade on, they still record at home, in a studio they call the Joycave, with electropop and indie rock instincts sitting alongside the guitars.
Daniel Armbruster, Joseph Morinelli, and Paul Brenner make up the band today; former keyboardist Benjamin Bailey, who also records solo as Jacob Asher, was part of the lineup for years before stepping back. Joywave has taken this material to rooms and outdoor stages including Washington Park and Anthology, a range that makes them a practical fit for college programming, festival and fair lineups, corporate dates, and private engagements.
