Judah & the Lion sit where bluegrass runs into alternative rock, an alt-folk band that has spent more than a decade pulling banjo-and-mandolin roots music toward folk rock and pop-infused folk. Their 2013 single "Sweet Tennessee" reached No. 2 on the Billboard Bluegrass Albums chart, and the records that followed kept widening the frame: Folk Hop n' Roll in 2016, Pep Talks in 2019, and The Process in 2024.
They started on a college campus. The band came together as an alt-folk trio at Belmont University in Nashville, took the school's Best of the Best music competition in 2012, and have been working under the Judah & the Lion name since 2011. Nashville is still the home base.
Judah Akers fronts the group on vocals and guitar, with Nate Zuercher, Brian Macdonald, and Spencer Cross filling out the lineup, and the band releases through Cletus the Van Records. Their touring runs through rooms like The Mill & Mine, Iron City, and Bogart's, the kind of mid-size clubs and theaters that translate well to college programming, festival and fair lineups, corporate dates, and private events.
