Just Blaze is Justin Gregory Smith, an East Coast hip hop and R&B producer whose credits run through Roc-A-Fella Records. He worked as a producer on Jay-Z's The Dynasty: Roc La Familia in 2000, and released records under his own name in the years that followed, including Higher in 2013 and One in 2019. He also runs his own imprint, Fort Knocks Entertainment, founded as a sublabel of Atlantic Records, and carries a producer tag recognizable enough to be catalogued as its own credit.
He came up in Paterson, New Jersey. Smith started DJing in his youth, interned at Manhattan's Cutting Room studio, and spent three years studying computer science at Rutgers University before leaving school to produce full time. The studio apprenticeship and the technical training both show up in the work: a producer who learned the room first and the software with it.
The Grammy nominations tell the rest. His production has appeared on six Album of the Year nominees, among them Usher's Confessions and Kendrick Lamar's Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, and he picked up a Best R&B Song nomination for Marsha Ambrosius' "Far Away" in 2012.
