Kelis is a singer from Manhattan who has moved across R&B, neo-soul, pop and electro house without ever settling into one of them for long. Her Grammy nominations trace that movement: "Milkshake" was nominated for Best Urban/Alternative Performance in 2004, and the album Kelis Was Here was nominated for Best Contemporary R&B Album in 2007. By the release of Food in 2014, she had collected nine awards from thirty-three nominations, and her catalog reads less like a single lane than a sequence of decisions.
The name came before the career. Her parents built it by combining parts of their own, Kenneth and Evelisse, and she has recorded as a solo artist ever since under the full name Kelis Rogers, with work issued through Knight & Shepherd Inc.
Her live reach widened fast. In 2001 she took the Brit Award for International Breakthrough Act and the NME Award for Best R&B/Soul Act in the same year, then joined Moby on the Area:One tour and U2 on the Elevation tour, two very different rooms for a singer who had just broken internationally. She has since played festival grounds including Victoria Park and the Port Eliot Estate.
