Kem, born Kim Lamont Owens, is an R&B and neo soul singer who built his career from the outside in. He put out his debut, Kemistry, on his own independent Kemistry Records, and Motown Records went on to release it along with the albums that followed. Album II arrived in 2005 and was certified Platinum in the United States, Kemistry was certified Gold by the RIAA, and Love Always Wins landed in 2020. He later relaunched Kemistry Records after leaving Motown.
He came to the music late and by the hardest road. Born in Nashville and raised into adulthood in Detroit, Kem lived through homelessness and substance addiction before he turned his life around and started making records. He founded the Mack & Third Foundation to support homeless and underprivileged communities, work that runs alongside the music rather than behind it.
The recognition followed: three Grammy Award nominations, one Billboard Music Award, and a Gold certification for Intimacy: Album III. Detroit remains the center of it, and he recorded his live album there. On the road he has played rooms and outdoor stages including the Iroquois Amphitheater, Carroll Stadium, and the Dell Music Center, making him a steady draw for festival and fair lineups, casino showrooms, college and corporate dates, and private engagements.
