Kenny Rogers was a country singer whose records also pulled from pop, rock, folk and jazz, and he kept making them long after most of his peers had stopped. There You Go Again arrived in 2008, followed by the career-spanning The First 50 Years in 2010 and You Can't Make Old Friends in 2013, three late entries in a catalog that runs past fifty releases.
He did not start at the top. Rogers grew up in poverty in a federal housing project in Houston, Texas, and spent years inside other people's groups before he ever carried his own name on a marquee: the Scholars, the Bobby Doyle Three, the New Christy Minstrels, and then Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. The solo career that defined him did not begin until 1976.
The payoff came fast. In 1977, "Lucille" took Single of the Year and Song of the Year from the Academy of Country Music, along with Top Male Vocalist for Rogers himself, plus Single of the Year from the Country Music Association and a Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance, one of three Grammy Awards he won.
