Kes is a soca band from Trinidad and Tobago, working a sound that also draws on reggae, Caribbean pop and rock. The group has been active since 2005, and its releases mark a long, steady build rather than a single breakout: On In 5 in 2009, Wired in 2012, and We Home in 2020, issued on the Kes label.
The band started close to home. Kes the Band was formed in Trinidad in 2005 by brothers Kees, Jon and Hans Dieffenthaller with their close friend Riad Boochoon, and that core still shapes the lineup.
Kees Dieffenthaller sings lead, Jon Dieffenthaller plays guitar, Riad Boochoon holds the bass and Dean James sits behind the drums. The band took the International Soca Monarch title in 2011, and its live dates run from the Unity Festival at Jazz at Lincoln Center to rooms like Forest Hills Stadium, Budweiser Stage and Leader Bank Pavilion. That range makes Kes a sought-after live act for festival and fair lineups, college events, casinos, and private engagements.
