Kevin Costner fronts Kevin Costner & Modern West, a country rock band whose catalog runs from outlaw country to country pop. Their debut, Untold Truths, arrived in 2008 and reached No. 61 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart and No. 35 on the Top Heatseekers chart. The records kept coming quickly after that, and by 2012 the band had written Famous for Killing Each Other, the music from and inspired by Hatfields & McCoys. Costner has recorded for Universal South.
The music came first, long before any of it was released. Costner, born in Lynwood, says he was trained on piano and sang in the church choir as a kid. Modern West was already a working touring act before the debut album existed, playing internationally in 2007.
Alongside Costner, the band's lineup has included John Coinman, Blair Forward and Teddy Morgan. Their live work has taken them to rooms as different as Rams Head in Annapolis, Strathmore and Agua Caliente Casino Resort, which is a fair picture of the range here: a listening-room country band that also holds a casino stage.
