Kishi Bashi works in indie pop and psychedelic pop with a violinist's ear at the center of it. The project introduced itself with 151a in 2012, then widened out across Lighght in 2014 and Sonderlust in 2016, a run of records that moved a solo string player into full indie rock arrangement. He records for Joyful Noise Recordings.
He arrived at that solo work the long way. Born in Seattle and raised in Norfolk, Virginia, Kaoru Ishibashi trained as a violinist and came through Berklee College of Music, spending years as a working multi-instrumentalist before Kishi Bashi existed as a name of its own.
Kishi Bashi is Ishibashi's solo project, and the credentials follow him rather than a band: an Emmy-nominated singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist whose live work runs from clubs like Terminal West to outdoor rooms including Sensorio and the Epstein Family Amphitheater at UC San Diego. That range makes him a natural fit for college programming, festival and outdoor concert series, performing arts center seasons, and private engagements looking for a live act that can scale from a small stage to an amphitheater.
