Laufey builds her records out of jazz standards, bossa nova, and her own songwriting, working under her first name alone. Born Laufey Lín Bing Jónsdóttir in Reykjavík, she released Bewitched in 2023 and took the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for it at the 2024 ceremony. A Matter of Time followed in 2025, and the tour behind it produced a live album recorded at Madison Square Garden.
She came to the music early, and from several places at once. Laufey was raised between Reykjavík and Washington, D.C., with annual visits to Beijing, and grew up playing cello and piano. Her attachment to the jazz standards that shape her writing started in her father's record collection.
The recognition came quickly. Her 2021 EP Typical of Me earned her Best New Artist in Jazz and Blues at the Icelandic Music Awards, and at the 2024 Grammys she played cello onstage alongside Billy Joel. Her touring has carried the same material into rooms the size of RAC Arena and Guangzhou Gymnasium, a scale that makes her a strong fit for college programming, performing arts centers, corporate events, festival lineups, and private engagements.
