LCD Soundsystem plays dance music for people who came up on punk rock. Since James Murphy formed the band in 2002, the group has held a strange middle ground between electronic and alternative dance on one side and new wave and punk on the other, and it has never sounded like a revival act. This Is Happening was staged as a goodbye and did not stick. American Dream followed on Capitol Records and pulled the band into Grammy company in the Best Alternative Music Album category, after earlier recognition in the dance and electronic categories.
Brooklyn made them. Murphy co-founded DFA Records before LCD Soundsystem existed, and the band carries that label's instincts: a song like "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House" works as a punchline and a floor-filler at the same time, and it drew Grammy attention on its own. More than two decades in, the catalog spans studio albums, live documents, and a 2022 turn on Saturday Night Live, which is a long way from a farewell.
Murphy has never run this as a solo project. Nancy Whang, Pat Mahoney, and Al Doyle anchor a lineup deep enough to fill a stage, which is why the band reads as convincingly in a room like the Napa Valley Opera House as it does on a casino stage at Grand Sierra Resort. The 2026 calendar includes Just Like Heaven Fest and Shaky Knees Music Festival, and that range is the point: a live act built for festival and fair lineups, college programming, corporate events, casinos, and private engagements.
