Ledisi is a soul and R&B singer with a jazz musician's ear, and the two sides of her have never stopped talking to each other. Her jazz record Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue took Outstanding Jazz Album at the California Music Awards well before the industry at large caught on. Lost & Found is the album that changed her standing, drawing Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best R&B Album at the same ceremony, and the neo soul run that followed on Turn Me Loose and Pieces of Me proved the attention was no accident. The Grammy itself arrived later, for Best Traditional R&B Performance, on a song called "Anything for You."
She started early, and not by a little. Born Ledisi Anibade Young in New Orleans, Louisiana, to musical parents, she was composing songs at four and standing onstage with the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra at eight. Oakland, California, raised her the rest of the way.
She has worked as a solo artist throughout, now with BMG Rights Management behind her, and the recognition has kept coming: three Soul Train Music Awards and nineteen NAACP Image Award nominations to date. Her calendar reads the same way her catalog does, moving between rooms like the Adrienne Arsht Center and DeVos Performance Hall and open-air dates at Fort Mose Historic State Park. That range makes her a natural fit for performing arts centers, colleges, corporate events, fairs and festivals, casinos, and private shows.
