Leikeli47 works out of New York and treats east coast hip hop as a starting point rather than a fence. A track of hers can sit on a house beat, tip into dancehall, or slow into neo-soul and R&B, and the voice on top of it never loses its shape. Wash & Set in 2017 and Shape Up in 2022 bookend the stretch that made the case: two albums on Acrylic / Hardcover built as records, not as delivery systems for a single.
The music came before the deal. LK-47 arrived in 2010, and RCA Records signed her after that mixtape was already out in the world, which is a useful thing to know about an artist who has never sounded like she was waiting for permission. She has been working since then without a break in the run.
