Lido Pimienta makes electronic pop built on Afro-Colombian and Latin music, and she has been running that combination on her own terms since she self-produced La papessa in 2016. That album won the Polaris Music Prize for best Canadian album the following year. Miss Colombia arrived in 2020 and went further, landing on the Polaris shortlist, earning a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album and a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album. She records for Epitaph.
Her music comes out of two places at once. Pimienta was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, an Afro-Colombian artist of Indigenous Wayuu heritage, and later based her career in Canada, where La papessa brought her the recognition that opened the rest of it up.
She works as a solo artist, credited as Lido María Pimienta Paz, and has performed everywhere from Lula Lounge and the Royal Botanical Gardens to Walt Disney Concert Hall. The awards have kept coming with her: a Juno nomination for Recording Package of the Year for Miss Colombia, and a 2026 Juno nomination for Latin Music Recording of the Year for La Belleza. She is a sought-after booking for college programming, performing arts center series, festival and fair lineups, corporate events, and private engagements.
