Lights is a Canadian singer-songwriter who found her audience in synth-pop in the late 2000s and has been widening the frame ever since. Little Machines in 2014 and Skin&Earth in 2017 set the shape of her writing, and How to Sleep When You're on Fire followed in 2020, released on Lights Music Inc. Across that run her catalog moves between synthpop, alternative rock, dance, and drum and bass rather than settling into one lane.
She did not start there. Born Valerie Anne Poxleitner in Timmins, Ontario, she spent her childhood traveling with her missionary parents, and she came up through punk and alt-rock before the synths arrived. That background still shows in how the records are built.
Lights works as a solo artist and carries the whole project herself, from the writing to the stage. She is a four-time Juno Award winner and the first-ever recipient of the Billboard Canada Visionary Award, and she has been featured by the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. Her touring has taken her to rooms like Berghain and Bitterzoet, which is a fair measure of the range: a live act that fits college programming, festival and fair lineups, corporate stages, casinos, and private events.
