Little Feat work the seam where blues rock meets country and Southern rock, with boogie rhythm holding the floor underneath. Warner Bros. Records carried them out of their first years, and the band never treated that era as the end of the story: the catalog keeps moving from Chinese Work Songs at the turn of the century through Join the Band and on to Rooster Rag in 2012. Across all of it the group has favored playing over polish, which is why the records still sound like a working band rather than a studio project.
They came up inside Frank Zappa's orbit. Lowell George and Bill Payne formed Little Feat in Los Angeles in 1969 after their tenure with the Mothers of Invention, then brought in bassist Roy Estrada and drummer Richie Hayward to fill out the rhythm section. That grounding in a band built on musicianship set the terms early, and Payne's keyboards and George's guitar gave the group two distinct voices to write around instead of one.
More than twenty musicians have passed through the ranks since, Paul Barrère among the longest-serving, and the songs have absorbed each of them without losing their shape. The live work now runs through performing arts centers and outdoor grounds, from Bergen Performing Arts Center to Indian Ranch and Cape Cod Melody Tent, in front of audiences who came for the playing. Little Feat remain a dependable draw for festival and fair lineups, casino showrooms, college events, and private engagements looking for a band with a deep catalog and decades of stage time behind it.
