Living Colour is a New York City band whose sound sits where funk rock, funk metal, and alternative metal meet, and their Epic Records run put that combination in front of a rock audience that had not heard it framed quite that way. The band has kept the lineup working rather than trading on the catalog: CollideØscope arrived in 2003, The Chair in the Doorway followed in 2009, and Shade landed in 2017.
The band began with guitarist Vernon Reid, who moved to New York City as a child and grew up in Brooklyn. Before Living Colour existed, Reid was active in New York's Black Rock Coalition, and the band he assembled in 1984 carried that organizing instinct into its music.
Vocalist Corey Glover fronts the group alongside Reid, with Doug Wimbish on bass and Muzz Skillings among the musicians who have held that chair. The credentials are on the record: an MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist in a Video for "Cult of Personality" in 1989, a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance for the same song in 1990, and a second Grammy in that category for Time's Up in 1991. They played the inaugural Lollapalooza tour in 1991 and recorded live at CBGB in New York City in December 1989. That mix of award-winning material and a road-tested live show makes them a strong fit for festival and fair lineups, college programming, casino stages, corporate dates, and private engagements.
