Liz Phair is an indie rock and alternative singer-songwriter whose debut album, Exile in Guyville, arrived in 1993 and set the terms for the work that followed. The catalog since then stretches from that first record to The Girly-Sound Tapes in 2018, which finally gave her earliest homemade recordings an official release, and on to Soberish in 2021. She is a Chrysalis Records artist.
She came to the guitar sideways. Born in New Haven, Connecticut and raised in the Chicago area, Phair started mingling with local musicians as a student at Oberlin College, and it was that circle that pushed her to learn to play. Before any label was involved, she had already recorded three homemade Girly-Sound cassettes.
Phair works as a solo artist under her own name, Elizabeth Clark Phair, and she is a Grammy-nominated artist. Her stage history runs from the Greek Theatre and McMenamin's Edgefield Amphitheater to a performing-artist listing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
