Lizzo works across pop soul, contemporary R&B and hip hop, and she has released music through Nice Life and Atlantic Records. Cuz I Love You (2019) is the album that turned her into an arena-scale name and won her a Grammy, along with a second Grammy for the single Truth Hurts. Special followed in 2022, and MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING arrived in 2025.
She did not arrive fully formed. Born Melissa Viviane Jefferson in Detroit in 1988, she moved with her family to Houston at age nine, started rapping as a teenager and formed a group called Cornrow Clique. She also played flute in the Spirit of Houston Marching Band while at the University of Houston, which is a useful thing to know about a performer whose records are built on brass and breath control.
Before her solo career, she worked in groups including The Chalice and GRRRL PRTY. She has since collected four Grammy Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, four Soul Train Music Awards and a BET Award, and she has performed at Coachella, Glastonbury and Bonnaroo. That combination of award-winning records and proven large-crowd festival sets makes her a strong fit for festival and fair headline slots, college events, corporate programs and private engagements.
