Los Retros is the recording project of Mauricio Tapia, a multi-instrumentalist working in bedroom pop, indie pop and indie rock who plays every instrument on his own records. Retrospect, in 2019, is the release the project is still measured against, and Tapia has spent the years since looking in both directions at once. Early Days (2016-2019) gathered up the material that preceded it, and Odisea arrived in 2026. Los Retros records for Stones Throw Records.
He came up in Oxnard, California, and he started young. Tapia, a first-generation Mexican-American musician, has been writing and recording since his early teens, and the one-man approach is the whole method rather than a credit line: guitar, vocals, keyboard, bass and drums are all his.
The project began as a trio with Chaisson Nuusolia and Brayan before it narrowed to Tapia alone, and the live show has taken it into rooms like Le Poisson Rouge, The Basement East and First Unitarian Church. Active since 2017 and still releasing, Los Retros is a sought-after live act for college programming, festival and fair lineups, casinos and private events.
