Lute is a Charlotte rapper working in southern and alternative hip-hop with a conscious-rap bent. He introduced himself with the 2012 mixtape West 1996, returned five years later with West 1996 Part 2 as a Dreamville Records artist, and followed it in 2021 with Gold Mouf, released through Dreamville and Interscope Records. The three titles read as one continuous project, a writer circling the same neighborhood and coming back each time with more range.
Born Luther Nicholson in West Charlotte, North Carolina, he built his early reputation the local way, on hip-hop showcase stages at Tremont Music Hall, The Evening Muse, and the Neighborhood Theatre. The West 1996 mixtape carried enough of that city with it to get him signed, and Charlotte has stayed the subject rather than the backdrop.
Lute is featured on Revenge of the Dreamers III, the Dreamville compilation nominated for Best Rap Album at the Grammys, with its tracks Down Bad and Middle Child nominated in Best Rap Performance categories. He performed at the Spectrum Center during a Charlotte Hornets halftime in 2020 and toured through the large-scale Dreamville events built around that album era. He works as a solo artist, which makes him a straightforward fit for college programming, festival and fair lineups, corporate dates, and private events.
