Lyle Lovett is an American singer and songwriter whose witty lyrics and use of diverse musical genres give him a distinctive approach to country music. His writing moves between country, alternative country, americana, and blues, and it has kept a long recording career in motion: Natural Forces arrived in 2009, Release Me followed in 2012, and 12th of June came in 2022. He records for Boynton Recordings.
He was born November 1, 1957, in Klein, Texas, and came up out of Houston. He is a guitarist and a composer as well as a singer, and that dual footing in songcraft and performance is what carries the material live.
On stage he works with Lyle Lovett and His Large Band, the group that also gave its name to the record that won him the Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance in 1989. The Road to Ensenada took Best Country Album in 1996, and his collaborations have been honored as well: "Blues for Dixie" with Asleep at the Wheel won Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1994, and "Funny How Time Slips Away" with Al Green won Best Pop Vocal Collaboration the same year, bringing his total to four Grammy Awards.
