Macklemore is the stage name of Ben Haggerty, a Seattle hip-hop artist whose work runs from pop rap to conscious hip hop. His 2012 breakthrough came in partnership with producer Ryan Lewis on The Heist, home to Thrift Shop and Can't Hold Us, and he has kept releasing on his own since, from 2017's GEMINI to 2023's BEN.
He came up in the city that raised him. Haggerty grew up in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood and began writing rap lyrics around age 15 while attending Garfield High School, first putting out music with an early group called Elevated Elements and its album Progress.
The Heist made Macklemore & Ryan Lewis a Grammy story in 2014, winning Best Rap Album along with Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for Thrift Shop and Best New Artist, plus American Music Awards for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Album. That run turned into extensive international touring, with stops at rooms like the Showbox at the Market and the Théâtre Antique d'Orange. He remains a proven draw for festival lineups, college programming, corporate events, and private engagements.
