Michael W. Smith is a singer, songwriter, and pianist who has spent his career inside contemporary Christian music while keeping one foot in Christian rock and pop. His recent releases trace that range: Glory (2011), Decades of Worship (2012), and A Million Lights (2018) sit at the front of a catalog roughly forty titles deep, with his work issued through Rocketown Records and The Fuel Music.
He started at the piano. Born October 7, 1957 in Kenova, West Virginia, Smith grew up playing, then moved to Nashville in 1978 to chase music as a living. After recommitting his life to Christianity in 1979, he began touring with the Christian group Higher Ground, and that road work led directly to his first solo record.
Smith has worked as a solo artist throughout, and the credentials have stacked up accordingly: three Grammy Awards, an American Music Award, 45 Dove Awards, the ASCAP Golden Note Award in 1999, and induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. His stages have ranged from Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Angel Stadium to the Shubert Theatre, which is the practical case for booking him. He is an act that scales from a theater seat count to a stadium, and a fit for college programming, corporate events, fairs and festivals, and private engagements.
