Mountain Grass Unit plays bluegrass with one foot in tradition and the other in the jam, a modern roots sound that earned them the International Bluegrass Music Association's Momentum Band of the Year and Saving Country Music's Breakout Artist of the Year, both in 2025. They put it on record with an early studio set, Places I've Been, sharpened it on stage for their 2023 Audiotree Live session, and carried it forward through Runnin' From Trouble.
They came up out of Birmingham, Alabama. The band grew out of a long-running musical bond between Drury Anderson, Luke Black, Sam Wilson, and Josiah Nelson, four players who had been making music together long before the awards started arriving.
Anderson's mandolin and Nelson's fiddle trade off over the guitar and bass of Black and Wilson, every member singing, the kind of four-part front line that holds up across a festival weekend. They have built that reputation on stages like Telluride Bluegrass Festival, DelFest, and WinterWonderGrass, and they have a Grand Ole Opry debut on the books. That makes Mountain Grass Unit a natural fit for festival and fair lineups, college events, casino stages, and private engagements.
