Mr. Scruff is the stage name of English DJ and producer Andy Carthy, a Manchester-based artist working across electronic, acid jazz, house and electronica. His catalog is long and has grown steadily rather than in bursts: "Keep It Unreal" arrived in 1999, "Trouser Jazz" followed in 2002, and "Ninja Tuna" landed in 2008, with releases including work through All City Dublin. More than thirty records sit under the name, which says something about a producer who never treated the studio as an occasional visit.
He started young. Carthy was a 12-year-old bedroom DJ and producer in Macclesfield in 1984, pulling from two-tone, reggae, electro, hip-hop, boogie, early house and the 1980s megamix. That range is not a later reinvention. It is the raw material he learned on, and it still explains why a Mr. Scruff set moves between styles without losing the floor.
The project has always been a one-man operation, with Carthy handling both the production and the decks. His live dates take him through rooms and grounds of every size, among them 24 Kitchen Street, The Arch and Glendalough Estate, and he has kept up steady international touring and festival work for years. That makes him a practical booking for club nights, festival and fair stages, college programming, corporate events and private engagements, where a DJ who can read a room across several genres does more work than a single-lane set ever could.
