Natalie Merchant is a singer-songwriter whose literate folk-rock first made her the voice of 10,000 Maniacs and then one of the most successful solo artists of the 1990s. Her 1995 solo debut, Tigerlily, sold more than five million copies on the strength of "Carnival," "Wonder" and "Jealousy," and Ophelia (1998) went Platinum with "Kind & Generous." She has since released albums on her own Myth America label and on Nonesuch, including Keep Your Courage (2023), her first album of new material since 2014.
Jamestown, New York, is where it began. Merchant joined 10,000 Maniacs in 1981 while a student at Jamestown Community College and served as the band's lead singer and primary lyricist across seven studio albums. Her final recording with the group, a cover of "Because the Night," became the band's highest-charting U.S. single, and she launched her solo career after leaving in 1993.
Natalie Merchant has earned ASCAP Pop Music Awards for "Carnival," "Wonder," "Jealousy" and "Kind & Generous," and she appears in the 2025 documentary Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery. Her 2026 project A Cabinet of Wonders reimagines Mother Goose rhymes with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chicago Children's Theatre. With a catalog of beloved '90s hits and a thoughtful, literary stage presence, Natalie Merchant is a natural fit for performing arts center seasons, symphony collaborations, college concert series, festivals and private events.
