Navy Blue is the stage name of Los Angeles rapper and producer Sage Elsesser, who works in a strain of hip hop shaped by soul and jazz. After first making his name as a professional skateboarder, he began releasing EPs as Navy Blue around 2015 and arrived as a full-length artist in 2020 with the back-to-back albums Àdá Irin and Song of Sage: Post Panic!. He followed them with Navy's Reprise in 2021, building out a catalog of conscious, experimental rap on Freedom Sounds.
He came up inside a tight circle of like-minded artists. Elsesser sharpened his craft rapping with and producing for Earl Sweatshirt, MIKE, Armand Hammer, and Wiki, and the influences run deeper than the studio: he is the son of an African-American singer and a Chilean drummer and percussionist.
That live reach extends across rooms like The Regency Ballroom, Brooklyn Paramount, and The Fillmore Silver Spring, and a set at the Galeria Zé dos Bois program in Lisbon. The result is a grounded, soul-leaning live act that fits college lineups, festival bills, and private engagements.
