New Edition has been working since 1978, and the group's sound has moved with R&B itself: soul and pop early on, then new jack swing and contemporary R&B. Heart Break took the 1989 Soul Train Award for Best R&B/Urban Contemporary Album by a group, and Home Again did the same eight years later, winning the 1997 Soul Train Award for Best R&B/Soul Album by a group. Later releases include One Love in 2005 and the Gold collection in 2009, and the group has recorded for Geffen Records.
The group came up in Roxbury. Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Bobby Brown started singing together while they were still in elementary school, and after the trio won a local talent show in 1980, Ralph Tresvant and Ronnie DeVoe joined and set the lineup that Boston sent out into the world. Johnny Gill came into the group later.
The credential list is long: American Music Awards for Favorite Soul/R&B Band, Duo or Group in both 1987 and 1997, the BET Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. On the road they work at arena scale, with dates at Toyota Center, State Farm Arena and the Smoothie King Center. That makes New Edition a strong headline booking for festival and fair lineups, casino showrooms, college programming, corporate events and private engagements.
