Olafur Arnalds is an Icelandic composer whose catalog sits between classical writing and ambient electronic music. For Now I Am Winter, in 2013, and The Chopin Project, two years after it, leaned hard toward the classical side of that split. By some kind of peace in 2020, the two sides had stopped competing. He releases through OPIA Community.
He arrived at this music from the opposite direction. Born in 1986 in Mosfellsbær, Iceland, Arnalds started out as a drummer in hardcore and metal bands, among them Fighting Shit and Celestine, and only later turned toward the symphonic and neo-classical writing he is known for now.
That range still shows up in the work he takes on outside his own name, including Kiasmos and SAGES, and his composing has earned a BAFTA Award for Best Original Music. On stage he has played Eventim Apollo, Salle Pleyel, and the Concertgebouw, rooms that suit a set built on detail rather than volume. He is a strong fit for performing arts centers and festival programming, college and corporate events, and private engagements.
