Our Lady Peace are a Toronto alternative rock band whose post-grunge sound broke through nationally with 1994's Naveed and its hit "Starseed," then went Diamond in Canada with 1997's Clumsy and its four hit singles, including the title track and "Superman's Dead." The catalog runs from those Columbia Records years through Spiritual Machines and Gravity into later independent chapters, including Burn Burn in 2009, Curve in 2012, and Somethingness in 2018, a run that tracks the band settling into its own sound rather than chasing anyone else's.
The name itself tells part of the story. Vocalist Raine Maida and guitarist Mike Turner first played together at the University of Toronto in 1992 under the name As If, then recruited bassist Chris Eacrett and drummer Jeremy Taggart and took the name Our Lady Peace in tribute to a 1943 Mark Van Doren poem. Duncan Coutts later joined on bass, replacing Eacrett ahead of Clumsy.
The band has taken home four Juno Awards, including Group of the Year, Rock Album of the Year, and Recording Package of the Year, along with a CASBY Award. They also hold ten MuchMusic Video Awards, tied with Billy Talent for the most ever given to a band. Active since 1992, they have appeared at major Canadian rock and alternative festivals and have played rooms as varied as The KEE to Bala and Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Ottawa, with their 30th anniversary OLP30 tour taking them through theatres and clubs across the United States and Canada.
