Owl City is the synth-pop project of Adam Young, working a bright electronic strain of pop that also touches dream pop. Its best-known song, "Fireflies," carried the project to awards and radio recognition in 2010, and Young has kept the name in motion with full albums since, including Cinematic in 2018 and Coco Moon in 2023, part of a catalog that stretches back to the project's start.
He built the whole thing himself first. Young began Owl City in 2007 by making electronic music in his basement in Owatonna, Minnesota, and uploading the songs to MySpace, where the following he gathered online led to a deal with Universal Republic Records.
Owl City remains a one-person project, with Young as its sole member, and he records for Republic Records. "Fireflies" won Record of the Year at The Record of the Year in 2010 and Hot 100 Airplay of the Year at the Billboard Japan Music Awards the same year, and it was nominated for Best Track at the Q Awards. The project also drew a Žebřík Music Awards nomination for Best International Discovery in 2009 and an ARIA Awards nomination for Most Popular International Artist in 2010. That combination of a song audiences already know and a deep synth-pop catalog makes Owl City a strong fit for college programming, festival and fair lineups, corporate events, and private engagements.
