Patoranking is the stage name of Patrick Nnaemeka Okorie, a solo artist from Lagos who works across Afrobeats, reggae, and dancehall and records with AMARI MUSIQ. His catalog reaches back to God Over Everything and runs through Three in 2020 and Wilmer in 2023, a stretch that shows a writer keeping reggae and dancehall phrasing at the center of his Afrobeats records rather than off to the side of them.
He came up the hard way. The oldest of five children, he grew up in Ilaje, a Lagos slum, in conditions of extreme poverty, and he was selling goods in traffic at 13 to help support his family.
The recognition came with the records. "My Woman My Everything" took Best Song of the Year at the MTV MAMA awards, and in 2020 Forbes Africa named him to its 30 Under 30 class. He has carried the catalog to rooms as formal as the Barbican Centre, which makes him a sought-after live act for college programming, festival and fair lineups, corporate dates, and private events.
