Paul McCartney is a British rock and classic pop artist whose recorded work has moved through Parlophone, Apple, Capitol and his own MPL. He has kept writing and releasing on his own terms rather than settling into a back catalog: Flaming Pie and McCartney III both came out in 2020, and The Boys of Dungeon Lane is set for 2026.
He came up in Liverpool, born there in 1942 and raised in Walton, and he worked his way through The Quarrymen and The Silver Beatles before The Beatles, then formed Wings. That hometown stayed in the writing. His first full-length symphonic composition, Liverpool Oratorio, was commissioned by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and premiered at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral.
The Wings years brought a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for "Band on the Run" in 1975 and a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for "Rockestra Theme" in 1980, part of the 19 Grammy Awards he has collected alongside an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award and a Critics' Choice Movie Award. On stage he has played Live Aid at Wembley Stadium in July 1985 and appeared at the Sanremo Music Festival at Teatro Ariston in February 1988. That range, from stadium bills to a cathedral premiere, makes him a headline draw for festival and fair lineups, college and corporate events, casinos, and private engagements.
