Perfume Genius is Michael Alden Hadreas, an American musician whose songwriting has moved steadily outward from indie pop into art pop and chamber pop arrangements. Signed to Matador, he reached a wider audience when No Shape was shortlisted for the 2017 Mercury Prize, then consolidated it with Set My Heart on Fire Immediately in 2020, which turned up on multiple year-end best album lists. Glory arrived in 2025.
He came to it on his own terms. Hadreas grew up in Seattle, Washington, and began putting out music under the Perfume Genius name in 2008. It remains a solo project, which is part of why the catalog can swing from electronic textures to baroque and chamber writing without losing its center.
That range shows up on stage. Hadreas has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall, and Perfume Genius has played Coachella, Bonnaroo, Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago and Primavera Sound in Barcelona. It is an act that reads equally well on a festival bill and in a seated hall, which makes it a strong fit for college programming, festival lineups, performing arts centers and private events.
