Phillip Phillips is a pop rock and folk rock singer and guitarist who won the eleventh season of American Idol in 2012 and built a recording career out of it rather than a single moment. Behind the Light arrived in 2014 and Collateral followed in 2018, both pulling toward the guitar-forward rock end of his catalog. He now puts out music through Phil Phil Music.
He came to the instrument sideways. An Albany native, Phillips was 14 when his sister's boyfriend taught him a few chords, and he worked out most of the rest himself. He later joined an acoustic band with his sister and brother-in-law, and that is where he grew into the job of being a singer.
Phillips works as a solo artist, and his live schedule runs through rooms and outdoor spaces built for a crowd: the Mentor Civic Amphitheater, the Milwaukee County Zoo, Baie de Beauport.
