Phish built a career out of the jam band tradition, pulling progressive rock and funk into long-form live sets that their studio work has always fed back into. Their albums have carried that same range, from Sigma Oasis in 2020 to Evolve in 2024, alongside official live documents of their Madison Square Garden runs. The band has recorded for Elektra and has earned one GRAMMY Award nomination.
The start was ordinary enough. In 1983, freshman Trey Anastasio put up flyers around the University of Vermont campus looking for musicians. Jon Fishman, Mike Gordon, and Jeff Holdsworth answered, and the group began gigging regularly around Burlington.
Page McConnell joined the lineup that Anastasio, Gordon, and Fishman still anchor, and the band grew into an act capable of organizing large-scale festivals staged entirely around its own performances, including The Great Went and Big Cypress. Their touring history runs through Madison Square Garden and Merriweather Post Pavilion, which makes them a proven draw for festival and fair lineups, college events, and private engagements where the audience comes for the show itself.
