Phosphorescent is Matthew Houck, and it has been since 2001. The name covers a body of work sitting somewhere between alt-country, folk rock and indie rock, held together less by a fixed sound than by Houck's writing. Several albums came before Pride in 2007, his first for the indie label Dead Oceans, and the two decades since have found the project moving at its own pace: Muchacho in 2013, then Revelator in 2024.
He started out alone. Houck was in his early twenties in Athens, writing songs and touring solo, when he took on the Phosphorescent moniker and began releasing records under it. That habit of carrying a show himself still shapes the band. The project remains his to expand or pare down, which is why the catalog spans so many years without settling into a formula.
Australian songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jo Schornikow later joined the group, and Houck's work has also come out through Lost Art Records. Live, Phosphorescent has played the Crossing Brooklyn Ferry festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and End of the Road in Wiltshire, UK, and holds the room just as well in a club like The Basement East. A band that works at that scale and at that one suits college programs, festival and fair lineups, performing arts center seasons, and private events.
