Pretty Lights is the electronic project of producer Derek Vincent Smith, who works in trip hop, hip hop, soul and glitch hop. The first album, Taking Up Your Precious Time, arrived in 2006, and by the time A Color Map of the Sun landed in 2014 the project had earned a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album. Smith has issued the music through his own imprints, 8 Minutes 20 Seconds Records and Pretty Lights Music.
Smith came to this out of a band, not a bedroom. Before starting Pretty Lights in 2006 he was making music in Fort Collins with the hip-hop group Listen, alongside his friends Michal Menert and Corey Eberhard. Both stayed close to the work that followed. Menert is credited as a member of Pretty Lights, and Eberhard played drums among the touring musicians who have backed the project live.
On stage, Pretty Lights has headlined multiple shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado and has appeared on festival lineups including Bonnaroo and Coachella. The project has been active continuously since its start, and it fits college audiences, festival and fair lineups, casino calendars, corporate events, and private engagements.
