Primus is a San Francisco based alternative rock band, though the label only half fits a group whose catalog also runs through funk metal and progressive rock. Bassist Les Claypool and guitarist Todd Huth started the band in the mid-1980s, and it has been active since 1984. Green Naugahyde (2011) put the group back on record after a long stretch away from studio albums, Primus & the Chocolate Factory With the Fungi Ensemble (2014) sent it into stranger territory, and The Desaturating Seven (2017) followed. Caroline Records is the band's label.
The origins are local rather than metropolitan. Primus came together out of El Sobrante, and the founding pairing of Claypool and Huth set the template the band still works from.
The lineup has turned over many times across those decades. Guitarist Larry LaLonde and drummers Jay Lane and Bryan Mantia are among the players who have filled it out alongside Claypool. On stage the band works rooms of every size, from Petco Park and the Long Beach Amphitheater to the Blue Note Napa Summer Sessions, which makes Primus a practical fit for festival and fair lineups, college events, casino showrooms, and private engagements.
