PUBLIC is a pop-rock band from Cincinnati whose writing runs indie pop hooks through disco and funk. They put out their debut EP, Red, on their own, and stayed independent through the stretch that produced "Make You Mine" in 2019. By the Three Hearts EP in 2022, the group had reportedly signed with Island Records, a move discussed in interviews in 2020, without much changing the self-directed approach that got them there.
They started early. Vaughn, Lapps and Alvarado met in their high school jazz band, where Vaughn was on guitar, Lapps was on drums and Alvarado switched over to bass, and the band came out of that room rather than out of a scene they had to go find.
Those roles have grown since: John Vaughn handles lead vocals and guitar, Matthew Carter Alvarado plays bass, synthesizers and backing vocals, and Ben Lapps drums. On stage the band has worked festival bills including Forecastle Festival in Louisville, Kentucky, and Bunbury Music Festival on home ground in Cincinnati, the kind of dates that suit a set built on melody and rhythm section muscle. It travels well to college programming, festival and fair lineups, corporate events and private shows.
