Pussy Riot is a feminist protest collective and punk band from Moscow, working across punk rock, performance art, and riot grrrl. Their recorded output runs from the 2012 release Kill the Sexist! to MATRIARCHY NOW in 2022, the work of a group that treats music and confrontation as the same act.
The collective officially formed in the summer of 2011, when Nadya Tolokonnikova and Kat broke away from the radical street-art group Voina to build something more explicitly feminist. That lineage shows in the work: the protest came first, and the band grew out of it.
Founding members include Nadya Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, and the group's stand has been recognized with the LennonOno Grant for Peace, the Václav Havel Prize, and the Hannah Arendt Prize.
