Queens of the Stone Age make hard rock with the heat and drift of stoner and desert rock underneath it, and Josh Homme has steered that sound since the band came together in 1997. They started in the desert, after an ending. Kyuss broke up in 1995, and Homme built this band out of what was left of it two years later, keeping the weight of that stoner rock foundation while pointing it somewhere new. Palm Desert is not a place that produces bands by accident, and the band has never fully left it behind in the music.
The lineup has been a revolving door of serious players, among them Nick Oliveri, Dave Grohl, Mark Lanegan, and Troy Van Leeuwen, and the songs that came out of those years did the talking. Kerrang! named them Best International Newcomer in 2000, and "No One Knows" drew a Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2003, the first of nine nominations across their career. They have since grown into a band that fills rooms the size of Olympiastadion and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which makes them a proven draw for festival and fair lineups, college programming, casino stages, and private engagements looking for a rock act with real range.
