Rainbow Kitten Surprise is an alternative and indie rock band from Boone, recording for WMG and active since 2013. The catalog opens with the acoustic EP Mary and runs through How To: Friend, Love, Freefall, certified Gold by the RIAA in the United States, to Drop Stop Roll in 2023. The arc from a self-released EP to a Gold-certified album says most of what a buyer needs to know.
The band's start was a dorm-room one at Appalachian State University. Ela Melo and Darrick "Bozzy" Keller recorded and released Mary there in 2013, then expanded the group with fellow students Ethan Goodpaster, Jess Haney and Charlie Holt.
Melo fronts the band on lead vocals and guitars, with Keller on rhythm and lead guitar, Goodpaster on lead electric guitar and Haney on drums, all three adding backing vocals. The band's touring has taken them to rooms and outdoor stages including Grand Sierra Resort, Sandy Amphitheater and The Great Saltair, which makes them a fit for festival and fair lineups, college events, casinos and private engagements.
