Ray Parker Jr. is a Detroit R&B and pop soul artist who works as a vocalist, guitarist, songwriter and producer. He formed the group Raydio, recorded for Arista Records, and then wrote and performed the theme song for the 1984 film Ghostbusters, the credit that carried him from studio player to name on the marquee. His catalog keeps both halves of that story in view, from the retrospective The Best of Ray Parker Jr. & Raydio in 1999 to A Woman Needs Love in 2012.
He came up as a working musician first. Born in Detroit in 1954, Parker was a sought-after teenage session guitarist in the city's soul scene, learning arrangement and feel on other people's records before he made his own.
The Ghostbusters theme won Parker the Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance, and the same film brought a nomination for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media. His album The Other Woman had already earned him a nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance in 1983. Alongside his solo work, his group credits include Raydio and the Love Unlimited Orchestra.
